Scuba Diving vs Snorkeling

Both scuba diving and snorkeling get you into the water to see what’s down there, but they’re not the same thing. They differ in the gear you use, how deep you go, and how much training you need.

What is scuba diving:

Scuba diving means going underwater with proper gear: a scuba tank, mask, regulator, wetsuit or drysuit, fins and so on. SCUBA stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, and that gear is what lets you breathe down there. The regulator goes in your mouth and feeds you air from the tank on your back. The tank holds compressed air, so you breathe normally and can go deep.

Equipment used in scuba diving:

1. Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) 2. Regulator 3. Mask 4. Snorkel 5. Wetsuit 6. Defog 7. Fins and booties 8. Surface Marker Buoy 9. Dive weight, if local diving 10. Dive Computer 11. Underwater lighting 12. Cameras for recording.

Depth: Snorkelers can’t go where scuba divers go. Scuba divers can descend several hundred feet, depending on their certification level and experience.

Experience Level: Scuba diving usually needs certification and training from PADI or SSI. As you move up through the certification levels, from beginner to advanced, you can take on harder dives.

What is snorkeling:

Snorkeling is swimming along the water’s surface with a mask and a snorkel, a breathing tube that lets you breathe face-down in the water. Snorkelers stay near the surface and either hold their breath or come up for air. Equipment: a mask to see underwater and a snorkel to breathe. Fins are optional, though plenty of people wear them because they make swimming easier. Depth: most snorkelers stay a few feet below the surface. They don’t go down far like scuba divers do. Experience Level: snorkeling is simple and needs no formal training or certification. That said, you should be able to swim and know basic water safety, especially in open water.
