SSI Perfect Buoyancy

Ask any experienced diver what the most important skill in diving is and the answer is almost always buoyancy. Poor buoyancy burns through your air, tires you out, damages the reef, and makes every dive harder than it should be.

The SSI Perfect Buoyancy specialty teaches you to control buoyancy with your breathing rather than your hands and feet. You learn trim, horizontal positioning, and how to hover without moving. Most certified divers see a real difference after just two focused practice dives.

Studies show that properly trained divers use 20–30% less air than untrained divers at equivalent depths. Two buoyancy dives with focused instruction deliver more improvement than 20 unsupervised fun dives.

SSI Perfect Buoyancy — what you'll work on

Weight DistributionOptimal weight amount and placement for your body type. Over-weighting is the single most common buoyancy problem — we calculate your correct weight first.
Breathing as Buoyancy ControlUsing inhalation and exhalation to maintain neutral buoyancy without touching the BCD inflate/deflate button. Inhale to rise, exhale to sink.
Horizontal TrimBody positioning for horizontal diving — head, hips and fins at the same level. Reduces drag, protects the reef, and dramatically lowers air consumption.
Fin Techniques for Zero Bottom ContactFrog kick, modified flutter, back kick — techniques that move you horizontally without kicking up silt or touching coral.
Stationary Hover ExerciseMaintaining position at a fixed depth for 60 seconds without touching anything. The core buoyancy benchmark.
Controlled Ascent RateAscending at exactly 9m per minute to the 5-minute safety stop — using breathing and BCD in coordination.
Air Consumption TrackingMeasuring SAC rate (surface air consumption) before and after the course — most students see measurable improvement between Dive 1 and Dive 2.

Who can take SSI Perfect Buoyancy

SSI Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
Age 10 or older
No minimum logged dives — but some open water experience helps
No prior specialty training required
Students with 5–15 logged dives often see the most dramatic improvement because they have enough water time to understand what they were doing wrong, but not enough to have deeply ingrained bad habits. Experienced divers with hundreds of dives also benefit significantly.

Where your 2 buoyancy dives take place

We run the buoyancy training dives at Grandé Island's calmer sites, picked for their stable conditions.

Site selection: Shelter Cove (6–14m, protected bay, minimal current) and Bounty Bay (5–12m, shallow reef, long bottom times). Both sites have clean sandy bottoms ideal for hover exercises, and enough reef structure for finning technique practice above coral without damage.
Grandé Island Reef
5–18m · All levels

Coral gardens, moray eels, snappers, parrotfish. The primary training reef — gentle conditions and rich marine life.

Suzy's Wreck
12–18m · OW+

British-era vessel thick with soft coral. Resident groupers, blue-spotted stingrays, moray eels. Light-zone penetration possible.

Sail Rock
14–24m · AOW recommended

Rocky pinnacle with currents and pelagics. Eagle rays, drift diving. One of Goa's most dynamic dive sites.

Shelter Cove
6–14m · All levels

Protected bay, very gentle. Nudibranchs, pipefish, seahorses. Ideal for skill-focused dives without current distraction.

Bounty Bay
5–12m · All levels

Shallow reef for long bottom times. Macro life — nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish. Great for photography and hover practice.

Your ScubaPro Aladin Sport dive computer tracks your depth in real time during the exercises, so you can see on the screen whether your hover is holding steady or drifting up and down.

What changes after the SSI Perfect Buoyancy course

You'll feel the difference right away, and it keeps building with every dive after:

Significantly better air consumption — more bottom time per tank
Effortless horizontal trim — less fatigue on every dive
Zero reef contact — better environmental footprint
Foundation for wreck penetration (requires excellent buoyancy)
Foundation for underwater photography (camera requires both hands free)
Counts toward SSI Master Diver (4 specialties + rescue required)
Good buoyancy is also the groundwork for SSI Wreck Diving and SSI Photo & Video, since both need confident hands-free control. We'd suggest doing Perfect Buoyancy before either of those specialties.

Why take your course with FlyingFish in Goa

Here's what actually sets us apart, minus the marketing fluff.

ScubaPro gear, serviced on schedule

Pro-grade gear serviced every 100 dives or 6 months, not when it fails. MK25/S620 regulator, Hydros Pro BCD, Aladin Sport dive computer. You train on the same kit our working instructors use.

Maximum 4:1 diver-to-instructor ratio

Your instructor always knows where you are underwater. No crowded groups. If a skill needs more practice, you get the time, not whatever's left over after 8 other students.

Both SSI and PADI certifications at one centre

We teach both agencies at the same location, so you can pick the certification that fits your future dive plans. You get honest advice, not a push toward whichever we sell more of.

A proper base at 5-star Novotel Candolim

Proper briefing rooms, clean rinsing stations, a structured course schedule. The difference between a real dive school and a beach shack matters when you're doing a multi-day certification course.

Real-time underwater feedback at 4:1

With 4 divers per instructor, your instructor can watch your body position and breathing during the exercises and signal corrections underwater (more weight, less BCD, trim your hips) as they happen. That's what makes two dives with an instructor worth more than twenty fun dives on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Two dedicated buoyancy-focused dives at Grandé Island. Each dive has specific exercises — weight check and hover in Dive 1, trim, fin technique, and ascent control in Dive 2. Most students notice significant improvement between Dive 1 and Dive 2.

Yes — for most students. We calculate your surface air consumption rate (SAC rate) during Dive 1 and again during Dive 2. The majority of students show a 15–25% reduction in SAC rate between the two dives after correcting weight and using breathing as the primary buoyancy tool. The improvement continues with each subsequent dive as the habits become automatic.

Absolutely. Many experienced divers with 200+ dives have been reinforcing slightly inefficient habits for years. The course breaks those habits and replaces them with the correct techniques. Some of our most dramatic improvements have come from divers who thought they were already good — and discovered they had been over-weighted the entire time.

On a fun dive, you are distracted by the marine life, following a guide, and managing your time. There is no structured progression of exercises and no instructor giving you real-time feedback on your trim. The Perfect Buoyancy course is entirely focused — every minute is spent on specific exercises with deliberate instructor correction. The structured environment accelerates improvement dramatically.

If you arrive in Goa in the morning, we can schedule your theory session that day and your two buoyancy dives on Day 2. The course does not require a long lead time. Tell us your arrival date and we will fit it into your schedule.

Fin kicks that contact the bottom or coral cause direct physical damage. Silt kicked up by poor buoyancy smothers coral polyps and blocks sunlight. A neutrally buoyant diver with good horizontal trim moves through the water column without touching anything below. Over a lifetime of diving, a skilled diver causes a fraction of the environmental impact of an unskilled one.
