For daring divers
, cave scuba diving is hard to beat. Here are seven of the best places in the world to go cave diving.
Mexico’s
Yucatan Peninsula
is known for its cenotes, natural sinkholes filled with clear, cool freshwater. The visibility is excellent and the rock formations are worth the trip on their own. Popular cenotes for diving include Tajma Ha, The Pit, and Dos Ojos. If you can get to Mexico, dive at least one of them.
The Bahamas
have some of the largest underwater caves anywhere. Off the shore of Grand Bahama Island, the system known as “The Caves” is a maze of passageways, tunnels, and chambers full of odd rock formations and marine life.
Emerald Cave
, in Thailand, is also called Morakot. It sits inside the Mu Koh Surin Marine Park and you can only reach it by swimming through a low, narrow entrance, which trips up some first-timers. Once you’re through, the limestone cliffs open onto an emerald-green lagoon.
Blue Hole
, in Belize. The Great Blue Hole is a deep underwater sinkhole, known for its depth and rock structures. Divers can explore its stalactites and stalagmites, and you’ll often run into a fair bit of marine life down there.
Orda Cave in Russia
. One of the longest underwater caves on the planet, sitting close to the Ural Mountains. Divers can follow channels spanning over 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles), and the water is so clear you can pick out the gypsum formations easily.
Florida, Devil’s Eye
is a popular dive site with clear water and unusual rock. It’s part of the large cave system at Florida’s Ginnie Springs. You’ll see plenty of aquatic life while working your way through passageways lined with limestone.
Boesmansgat in South Africa
: In South Africa’s Northern Cape province, Boesmansgat, also called “Bushman’s Hole,” is a deep freshwater sinkhole. It’s not strictly a cave, but the depth and the eerie feel of the place make it a serious dive for experienced divers only.
Cave diving carries real risk. These sites are some of the best places to explore underwater, but they demand the right equipment, a careful head, and proper training. Don’t cut corners.
Goa is known for its beaches and nightlife, not cave diving. There just aren’t the right caverns or the training set-up for it here.
