The PADI Open Water Diver is the most widely recognised scuba certification on the planet. It's accepted at over 6,000 PADI dive centres across 183 countries, including the Maldives, Bali and the Red Sea. Once you have it, you can dive almost anywhere.

At FlyingFish in Goa, we deliver the PADI Open Water Diver course with the same 3-phase structure: PADI eLearning theory, 5 confined water pool sessions, and 4 open water certification dives at Grandé Island. The Arabian Sea's warm water and easy marine life make Goa a comfortable place to learn.

FlyingFish is a PADI-certified dive centre. You receive an official PADI certification card on completion — the same qualification issued everywhere in the world.

PADI Open Water — course structure

PADI uses a three-phase system: knowledge development, confined water training, then open water dives.

Phase 1 — PADI eLearning (or Manual)

PADI eLearning AppSelf-paced digital theory available on smartphone or tablet before you arrive in Goa. Covers 5 knowledge sections with quizzes.
5 Knowledge ReviewsIn-water briefings and knowledge reviews with your PADI Instructor covering each section of the course material.

Phase 2 — 5 Confined Water Sessions

Skills 1–5Buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, CESA (emergency swimming ascent), out-of-air procedures, compass navigation, equipment assembly — practiced until consistently correct.

Phase 3 — 4 Open Water Dives

Dives 1–2 at ~12mSkill demonstration in the ocean — replicate confined water skills in open water conditions under PADI Instructor supervision.
Dives 3–4 to 18mDeeper exploration dives. Demonstrate mastery, practice underwater navigation, and explore Grandé Island's reef with your instructor.

Who can take the PADI Open Water Diver course

Age 10 years or older
Swim 200m unaided (or 300m with mask, fins and snorkel)
Complete PADI's medical statement form
No active heart or serious lung conditions
No prior diving experience required
10–14 year olds earn the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification — same course, same skills, limited to 12m and must dive with a certified adult. At 15 the certification upgrades to full Open Water Diver automatically.

Your 4 PADI Open Water dives — Grandé Island, Goa

Your 4 certification dives take place at Grandé Island — a 30-minute speedboat ride from Novotel Candolim. PADI Instructor-guided throughout.

Grandé Island Reef
5–18m · All levels

Coral gardens, moray eels, snappers, parrotfish. The primary training reef — gentle conditions and rich marine life.

Suzy's Wreck
12–18m · OW+

British-era vessel thick with soft coral. Resident groupers, blue-spotted stingrays, moray eels. Light-zone penetration possible.

Sail Rock
14–24m · AOW recommended

Rocky pinnacle with currents and pelagics. Eagle rays, drift diving. One of Goa's most dynamic dive sites.

Shelter Cove
6–14m · All levels

Protected bay, very gentle. Nudibranchs, pipefish, seahorses. Ideal for skill-focused dives without current distraction.

Bounty Bay
5–12m · All levels

Shallow reef for long bottom times. Macro life — nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish. Great for photography and hover practice.

Typical site progression for PADI OWD: Dives 1–2 at Grandé Reef or Shelter Cove for skill consolidation in calm conditions. Dives 3–4 extending deeper toward Suzy's Wreck area or the 18m reef sections as you demonstrate increasing confidence.

Why take your course with FlyingFish in Goa

Here's what actually sets us apart.

ScubaPro gear, serviced on schedule

Pro-grade gear serviced every 100 dives or 6 months, not when it fails. MK25/S620 regulator, Hydros Pro BCD, Aladin Sport dive computer. You train on the same equipment working instructors use.

A 4:1 diver-to-instructor ratio, max

Your instructor knows where you are underwater at all times. No crowded groups. If a skill needs more practice, you get the time — not the time left over after 8 other students.

Both SSI and PADI at one centre

We teach both agencies at the same location. You choose which certification fits your future dive plans. We give you honest advice, not a push toward whichever we sell more of.

A proper base at the 5-star Novotel Candolim

Proper briefing rooms, clean equipment rinsing stations, structured course schedule. The difference between a dive school and a beach shack matters when you are doing a multi-day certification course.

PADI and SSI at one centre, your choice

FlyingFish is certified by both PADI and SSI. If you are deciding between the two, we give you an honest comparison based on your future dive plans — not a sales pitch. Both are taught to the same professional standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

The certifications are equivalent in terms of diving privileges — both allow you to dive to 18m independently with a buddy. PADI has the larger global network (6,000+ centres vs 3,300+ for SSI) and is more widely recognised on popular liveaboard routes. SSI tends to offer more flexibility in digital learning tools. For diving in the Maldives, Thailand, or Indonesia, either is widely accepted.

Yes — PADI Open Water is arguably the most recognised diving certification in all three destinations. Virtually every dive centre in those locations accepts it. Some liveaboards specifically list PADI OWD as a minimum requirement on their booking forms.

PADI eLearning is included in the course price at FlyingFish. You receive access credentials for the PADI app (available for iOS and Android). You can complete the 5 knowledge sections at your own pace on any device, before or during your time in Goa. There is no expiry on your eLearning access once purchased.

Yes. PADI has a referral system specifically for this scenario. If you complete your theory and confined water sessions with us, you receive a PADI Referral that allows you to complete your 4 open water dives at any PADI dive centre worldwide within 12 months. This is a commonly used option for time-limited travellers.

Most liveaboard operators worldwide require a minimum of PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent) plus a minimum number of logged dives (typically 10–20 for standard routes, 50+ for advanced liveaboards). Your PADI OWD card is the primary qualification — start logging dives immediately after certification.

Significantly more comfortable. Goa's water is 27–30°C — no thermal shock, no need for thick drysuits, and warm water makes buoyancy easier to learn. Cold-water certifications add layers of complexity (heavy suits, less mobility) that are absent here. Many divers from Europe and the UK specifically choose to certify in Goa or Asia for this reason.
