SSI Advanced Adventurer — dive deeper, choose your own path

Duration
2–3 Days
Max Depth
30m
Adventure Dives
5
Min Age
10+

The SSI Advanced Adventurer takes you from 18m to 30 metres and opens up new kinds of diving. You do five adventure dives: 2 mandatory ones (deep diving and navigation) plus 3 electives you pick from a menu of nine specialties.

There are no classroom exams here; all the learning happens in the water. Every dive gets its own briefing and debrief, so by the end you've sampled five different sides of diving and have a good idea which one you want to chase next.

Important note: The SSI Advanced Adventurer adventure dives are NOT the same as SSI Specialty certifications. If you want formal specialty credits (toward SSI Master Diver for example), you need the full specialty course. The Advanced Adventurer gives you a taste and the skills — not the specialty cert.

SSI Advanced Adventurer — your 5 adventure dives

Two dives are mandatory. The other three are yours to pick from the elective list.

Mandatory Dives

Deep Dive — to 30mPhysiology at depth: nitrogen narcosis recognition, pressure effects on equipment and the body, deep dive planning, controlled descent and ascent techniques. Usually conducted at Sail Rock.
Navigation DiveCompass heading and reciprocal bearings, kick-cycle distance estimation, natural navigation using reef features, returning accurately to the ascent line.

Choose Any 3 Electives

Wreck DivingExternal survey of a wreck, orientation and navigation around a structure, marine life ecology in wreck environments. Suzy's Wreck is the site.
Night & Limited VisibilityTorch use, limited visibility navigation, underwater communication in low light, close-buddy procedures.
Perfect BuoyancyAdvanced buoyancy and trim exercises — hover, controlled descent, maintaining depth without active finning.
Photo & VideoCamera setup and handling underwater, lighting considerations, approaching marine life without disturbance.
Boat DivingBackroll entries, boat procedures, current-assisted ascents, surface signal buoys, drift dive management.
Search & RecoveryU-pattern and expanding square search patterns, lift bag use, object location and recovery.
Waves, Tides & CurrentsReading conditions, reef hook use, drift diving technique, current-assisted navigation.
Enriched Air NitroxNitrox planning dive — extended NDLs in practice. Requires or leads to formal SSI EAN certification.
Scooter/DPVUnderwater scooter operation, towing techniques, shared DPV procedures.

Who can take the SSI Advanced Adventurer course

SSI Open Water Diver (or PADI OWD or equivalent) — required
Age 10 years or older
Comfortable and relaxed in open water
Recommend minimum 10 logged dives before the deep dive
No prior specialty training required
Your Open Water cert from any major agency (PADI, NAUI, CMAS, etc.) is accepted as the prerequisite. You do not need SSI specifically.

Where your 5 adventure dives take place

We choose the site on the day based on conditions, tides, and the electives you've picked. Every site is at Grandé Island, 30 minutes from Candolim.

Grandé Island Reef
5–18m · All levels

Coral gardens, moray eels, snappers, parrotfish. The primary training reef — gentle conditions and rich marine life.

Suzy's Wreck
12–18m · OW+

British-era vessel thick with soft coral. Resident groupers, blue-spotted stingrays, moray eels. Light-zone penetration possible.

Sail Rock
14–24m · AOW recommended

Rocky pinnacle with currents and pelagics. Eagle rays, drift diving. One of Goa's most dynamic dive sites.

Shelter Cove
6–14m · All levels

Protected bay, very gentle. Nudibranchs, pipefish, seahorses. Ideal for skill-focused dives without current distraction.

Bounty Bay
5–12m · All levels

Shallow reef for long bottom times. Macro life — nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish. Great for photography and hover practice.

Deep dive note: Sail Rock is the preferred site for the mandatory 30m deep dive — it provides an open-water descent with appropriate depth and interesting topography. Suzy's Wreck is used for wreck electives. Shelter Cove and Bounty Bay for buoyancy and photography electives.

Why take your course with FlyingFish in Goa

Here's what actually sets us apart, minus the marketing fluff.

ScubaPro gear, serviced on schedule

Pro-grade gear serviced every 100 dives or 6 months, not when it fails. MK25/S620 regulator, Hydros Pro BCD, Aladin Sport dive computer. You train on the same kit our working instructors use.

Maximum 4:1 diver-to-instructor ratio

Your instructor always knows where you are underwater. No crowded groups. If a skill needs more practice, you get the time, not whatever's left over after 8 other students.

Both SSI and PADI certifications at one centre

We teach both agencies at the same location, so you can pick the certification that fits your future dive plans. You get honest advice, not a push toward whichever we sell more of.

A proper base at 5-star Novotel Candolim

Proper briefing rooms, clean rinsing stations, a structured course schedule. The difference between a real dive school and a beach shack matters when you're doing a multi-day certification course.

We know which site suits which elective

Sail Rock for the deep dive. Suzy's Wreck for wreck electives. Bounty Bay for photography and buoyancy. Our instructors dive these sites every week and know which one fits which elective best.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Advanced Adventurer adventure dives are experience-building dives — they count toward your logged dive total and open up deeper diving, but they do NOT result in specialty certifications. If you want a formal SSI Wreck Diving specialty card, for example, you need to take the full SSI Wreck Diving course separately. Think of the Advanced Adventurer as a sampler — the specialties as the full courses.

In most cases, no. The elective dives in the Advanced Adventurer program follow the adventure dive format, not the full specialty program format. There are occasional exceptions with certain SSI centres for specific electives, but you should assume you need the full specialty for a formal credit.

The deep dive to 30m is conducted under direct supervision and follows a structured plan specifically designed for divers taking their first deep dive. We brief extensively on nitrogen narcosis recognition, pressure effects, and the planned ascent. The course exists precisely to introduce these depths safely with instructor guidance.

Yes — within reason. If conditions prevent a chosen elective site (for example, poor visibility for photography), your instructor will suggest alternatives. You confirm your elective preferences on Day 1, but the instructor adapts to actual conditions each day.

Yes — both certifications allow you to dive to 30m. Both require 5 adventure dives including a deep dive and navigation dive. The certifications are broadly equivalent in diving privileges, though they are issued by different agencies and have slightly different training approaches.

Wreck diving (Suzy's Wreck is on the doorstep), night diving (dramatic change of atmosphere on the same reef), and buoyancy are the three most requested. Photography is popular among students with action cameras. The deep dive at Sail Rock is a highlight regardless of what other electives you choose.
