SSI Confined Water Diving — Try Scuba in a Safe Pool Environment

Duration
2–3 Hours
Environment
Pool Only
Max Depth
~2m
Min Age
10+

Not ready for the ocean yet? The SSI Confined Water experience is the perfect first step. You breathe underwater for the first time in a controlled pool environment — no currents, no depth, no pressure — just you, your instructor, and your first breath below the surface.

This is not a certification course. There are no exams and no logbook dives. It is a structured introduction that gives nervous beginners a chance to decide if they want to continue toward full Open Water certification, in the most relaxed setting possible.

Perfect for: Anyone curious about scuba diving but not yet ready to commit to a full course. Children as young as 10. People with mild water anxiety who want a supervised first experience.

What you'll learn in the pool session

Your instructor covers essential safety and comfort skills before you get in the water, then guides you through each exercise step by step.

Pre-dive Safety BriefingHow scuba equipment works, hand signals, what to do if you feel uncomfortable, equalisation techniques for ears.
First Breaths UnderwaterControlled breathing through the regulator at shallow depth — the most important and memorable moment of the session.
Mask ClearingRemove water from your mask while staying underwater — one of the fundamental comfort skills every diver needs.
Regulator RecoveryLocate and replace a displaced regulator in your mouth — practiced in calm pool conditions.
Buoyancy IntroductionBasic weight and breathing adjustments so you feel neutral in the water rather than sinking or floating.
Controlled AscentHow to safely return to the surface at a controlled pace — a safety habit practiced from your very first dive.
Your instructor adapts the pace to your comfort level. If any skill feels difficult, you repeat it until it feels natural — there is no rushing.

Who can do the confined water experience

Entry requirements are minimal — this is designed specifically for first-timers.

Age 10 years or older
Comfortable being in water (don't need to be a strong swimmer)
No prior diving experience required
Basic medical fitness (no active heart or lung conditions)
Willing to try and no fear of closed-face masks
If you have a medical condition you are unsure about, we will ask you to complete a simple medical form on the day. Our instructors handle nervous beginners routinely — you are in safe hands.

Where your session takes place

The Confined Water experience takes place in a swimming pool — not at sea. This gives you the safest possible environment for your first underwater breaths.

Location: Pool at or near Novotel Resort & Spa, Candolim, Goa. Shallow water (~1.5–2m), crystal clear, no currents, no waves. Your instructor is in the water with you throughout.

After completing the pool session, if you want to progress, the natural next step is the SSI Open Water Diver course — where your first two pool sessions build on exactly these skills before you head out to the ocean.

What's included in this course

Pool session with certified SSI instructor
Full scuba equipment rental (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, weights)
Safety briefing and equipment orientation
Basic skills training in pool

Not Included

  • Open water dives (not part of this experience)
  • Certification card (this is not a certification course)
  • Personal expenses

Enjoyed it? Here's what you can do next

Most people don't stop here. Here are your options after the pool session:

Enrol in SSI Open Water Diver — the full 3–4 day certification course
Try SSI Scuba Diver — a 2-day faster track to a limited cert at 12m
Book a Try Scuba experience at sea (with an instructor by your side)
Take time to think and return when you feel ready — no pressure
Most people who complete the Confined Water experience choose to continue. Breathing underwater feels strange for about 60 seconds — then it feels completely natural.

Why take your course with FlyingFish in Goa

Here's what actually sets us apart.

ScubaPro Equipment — Maintained on Schedule

Pro-grade gear serviced every 100 dives or 6 months, not when it fails. MK25/S620 regulator, Hydros Pro BCD, Aladin Sport dive computer. You train on the same equipment working instructors use.

Maximum 4:1 Diver-to-Instructor Ratio

Your instructor knows where you are underwater at all times. No crowded groups. If a skill needs more practice, you get the time — not the time left over after 8 other students.

Both SSI and PADI Certifications at One Centre

We teach both agencies at the same location. You choose which certification fits your future dive plans. We give you honest advice, not a push toward whichever we sell more of.

Professional Base at 5-Star Novotel Candolim

Proper briefing rooms, clean equipment rinsing stations, structured course schedule. The difference between a dive school and a beach shack matters when you are doing a multi-day certification course.

Beginner-Specialist Instructors

Our instructors have introduced hundreds of first-timers to scuba. They recognise nervousness, know how to slow down without making it awkward, and genuinely enjoy watching someone breathe underwater for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is similar but more structured. A try-dive is often just putting on gear and going in. The Confined Water experience follows SSI's teaching framework — you learn specific skills in a specific order, guided by a certified SSI instructor the entire time.

No — this session takes place entirely in a pool. The ocean comes later if you choose to continue with Open Water certification. The pool is specifically chosen because it removes every variable except the equipment.

Tell your instructor immediately using the agreed hand signal and you will be brought back to standing depth within seconds. This happens regularly with first-timers and instructors are trained to manage it calmly. You will not be judged — you will be helped.

Yes. The minimum age is 10 years. Children often take to confined water diving faster than adults because they have less apprehension. Our instructors are experienced with junior divers.

You do not need to be a strong swimmer for the pool session. You should be comfortable in water — able to enter a pool without fear. Full swimming ability is required only when you progress to Open Water certification.

Approximately 2–3 hours including briefing, equipment setup, in-water time, and a debrief afterward. The actual underwater time is typically 30–45 minutes depending on your pace.
