What is included in the SSI Open Water Diver Course?

Open Water Diver is a scuba diving certification issued by the diving training organisation SSI (Scuba Schools International) and other similar organisations.

It is the first level of certification for beginner divers. In fact, it is designed to be taught to anyone with no previous diving experience.

Prerequisites


  • Minimum age for participation: 10 years old

  • Training prerequisites: Know how to swim

  • Number of theoretical sessions: 2 + online

  • Number of sessions in swimming pool / protected environment: 1 or 2

  • Number of sea dives: 4

  • Maximum training depth: 18 meters

  • Duration of training program: 3 days

Course Structure:

Day 1: Academics + Confined Water Dives


  • Morning: 8:00 AM


    Welcome & Orientation: Introduction to the course and team


    Paperwork


    Equipment overview


    Knowledge Development: Classroom or eLearning review; key topics: diving physics, dive planning, equipment use, and safety



  • 10:30 AM – Confined Water training 1-3 (Shallow Pool/Calm Water)


    Skill practice: regulator recovery, mask clearing, buoyancy, hand signals, etc.


    Introduction to assembling and disassembling scuba gear


    Breathing and finning techniques


Day 2: Open Water Dives 1 & 2 + Knowledge Review


  • Morning: 8 AM At The Jetty


    Open Water Dive 1: Max depth: ~12 meters (40 feet) or less; focus on comfort underwater, basic skills, buoyancy practice


    Open Water Dive 2: Max depth: 12-15 meters (~40-50 feet); focus on additional underwater skills like navigation, communication, and safety



  • Afternoon: 3:00 AM – Knowledge Development


    Review any outstanding academics


    Quick quizzes to confirm understanding of dive theory


Day 3: Open Water Dives 3 & 4 + Final Wrap-Up


  • Morning: 8:00 AM At The Jetty


    Open Water Dive 3: Max depth: Up to 18 meters (60 feet); focus on advanced buoyancy and underwater problem-solving


    Open Water Dive 4 (Final Dive): Explore underwater and practice independence; demonstrate mastery of all essential skills



  • Afternoon: 3:00 PM – Final Exam & Debriefing


    Complete certification paperwork


    Discuss continuing education or upcoming dives


    Certification presentation

What is the SSI Perfect Buoyancy Course?

The SSI Perfect Buoyancy program is a specialty scuba diving course designed to improve your control underwater, enhance your comfort during dives, and minimise your impact on the underwater environment. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, this course helps you fine-tune your buoyancy skills to make your dives more enjoyable and efficient.

Day 1


  • 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Registration and Briefing


    Meet at the dive center, complete paperwork


    Discuss course outline, safety briefings, and goals


    Review equipment setup and selection (especially for neutral buoyancy)



  • 9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Theory Session


    Overview of buoyancy principles, proper weighting techniques, breathing control for buoyancy adjustments, streamlining, trim, and equipment considerations


    Quick knowledge review and Q&A



  • 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM: Pool or Confined Water Skills Briefing


    Review and demonstrate exercises: weight check, hovering techniques, fine-tuning buoyancy using breathing



  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Pool or Confined Water Practice


    Weight check


    Hovering in different positions (horizontal, vertical)


    Moving through an obstacle course


    Simulating fin pivots or breath control for ascent/descent


Day 2 – Two Complimentary Open Water Dives When You Opt For This Combo


  • 8:00 AM At Jetty: Practice buoyancy skills in an open water environment


    Neutral buoyancy hover


    Controlled ascent/descent


    Streamlined swimming to avoid accidental contact with coral or seabed


    Hover or movement through natural obstacles



  • 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM: Debriefing and Certification


    Feedback on open water performance


    Discuss how to continue practicing and improving buoyancy


    Log dives and receive SSI Perfect Buoyancy card


Certification:

On successfully completing your training, you’ll receive the SSI Perfect Buoyancy Specialty certification through your MySSI application.

What is the Enriched Air Nitrox Course Structure?

Morning Session: Classroom and Knowledge Development


  • 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM: Welcome and Introductions; instructor introduction and course overview

  • 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM: Knowledge Review: Benefits of diving with Nitrox, risks, partial pressures, MOD, key calculations and tables

  • 10:30 AM – 11:15 AM: Analyzing Nitrox Tanks: hands-on practice with oxygen analyzers, labeling tanks, logging cylinder information, safety checks and calibration

  • 11:15 AM – 12:00 PM: Pre-Dive Planning: using dive computer with Nitrox, planning dives, no-decompression limits and MOD calculations

Lunch Break – 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Afternoon Session: Practical Application


  • 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Dive Briefing: review dive objectives, Nitrox-specific considerations, safety protocols

Day 2: Head to Grande Island for Nitrox Dives


  • 8:30 AM: Use your newly learnt skills with two complimentary Nitrox tanks, either on remaining dives or on two complimentary fun dives after the course
